aerosols

(particles suspended in an atmosphere)

Particles floating in an atmosphere are termed aerosols, examples being ice particles, water droplets, fine dust, and soot. The various kinds have effects on climate and in Earth's atmosphere, they are of interest regarding human health, and are of particular interest to astronomers for their effect on seeing. On planets and moons (such as Titan) aerosols are of interest as something requiring explanation, for their effect on the object's climate and weather, and for the challenge they present to viewing the object's surface.
