(arXiv.org)
(website with physics paper preprints)

The website, arXiv (arXiv.org) is a repository of science paper preprints which may be freely read online, which includes astrophysics papers. The site offers scientists a means to share drafts of their papers, and if the paper is to be published, a draft might be shared on the site just as it might be shared with colleagues in person. A goal of the site is enhancing research through quicker availability of reports of recent research. Being a preprint, the arXiv draft has the possibility of errors not found in the published draft.

arXiv's general thrust is physics, including astrophysics, but its papers also include mathematics, computer science, and some related fields. It offers preprints of a significant percentage of the published physics and astrophysics research papers since the mid 1990s, along with otherwise-unpublished papers, reports, and tutorials. Authors have occasionally added earlier papers of their own to arXiv. Between arXiv and the Astrophysics Data System, a significant amount of published astronomy and astrophysics research writing, past and present, is freely available online.

The website's name, arXiv, is pronounced like the English word "archive": the site is an archive of science paper preprints. The middle letter, "X", is used as a substitute for the graphically-similar Greek letter, χ, which has the sound of an English "k". The website's name is sometimes spelled using the Greek letter, i.e., arχiv.
