ellipsoidal variable
(rotating ellipsoidal variable)
(binary star elongated by gravity)
An ellipsoidal variable is a close binary star
with a variability due to one or both stars being
elongated by the tidal force between them.
Through their orbital period, sometimes more of an elongated
star faces us than other times, producing a precisely-timed
recurring variation.
If such a star is also an eclipsing binary,
that term is generally used.
