A field star is a star that is not part of any stellar cluster such as a globular cluster or open cluster. By this criteria, the Sun would be one.
The term field star is also used regarding a particular observation, for a star that happens to be within the field of the observation. In that case, the term implies a star that needs its own consideration; for example, if the observation was to acquire a star count of some particular stellar cluster, the term field star might be used for a star in the foreground that was not considered a member of the cluster.
