HARMONI
(for High Angular Resolution - Monolithic - Optical and Near-infrared - Integral Field Spectrograph)
is a planned visible-light/near-infrared spectrograph
with an integral field unit (IFU), intended to be one of the first instruments
installed on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), i.e., a first-light instrument.
Spectral resolution over its wavelength-range will
vary from R~3000 to R~17000.
The aim is that it simultaneously collect 30,000+ spectra over its
field of view.
Also, that it serve as a widely-used, general-purpose spectrograph
that is easy to operate and works efficiently, i.e., performs
observations with minimal time-overhead.
