LOPES (for LOFAR Prototype Station) was a ground-based cosmic-ray detector at the Karlsruhe, Germany operating from about 2003 to 2013, looking to detect cosmic rays by observing the radio signals that result from charged particles within an air shower interacting with Earth's magnetic field. Its relation to LOFAR is that LOFAR potentially could carry out this type of cosmic-ray observations among its work, and LOPES was an effort to prototype such observations. Various configurations were tried out.
