Messier 77
(M77, NGC 1068, Squid Galaxy)
(easily-observed spiral galaxy)
Messier 77 (M77, NGC 1068, or the Squid Galaxy)
is a barred spiral galaxy about 47 million light-years
distant. It is a Seyfert galaxy and an X-ray source.
Its orientation to our line of sight is reasonably far from edge-on,
offering advantages for some kinds of study.
IceCube has received high-energy neutrinos from
the galaxy's direction, and it is considered
a neutrino hotspot.
