M87*

(SMBH at the center of galaxy M87)

M87* is the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the galaxy, M87. The black hole is active, i.e., accretion is taking place, and it shows jets. This makes M87 an active galaxy, and M87* its active galactic nucleus (AGN). The black hole's mass is on the order of a billion MSun. It is an observation target of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and has been successfully imaged, revealing its black hole shadow, which shows a size consistent with a black-hole mass of 6.5×109 MSun.
