The Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) was a US defense satellite with infrared and ultraviolet observation capability. Its purpose was experimentation with defense technology and it doubled as an astronomical satellite, providing data contributed to NASA astronomical-data repositories. Among MSX's instruments was SPIRIT III ("Space Infrared Imaging Telescope"), a 33-cm telescope.
