NGC 6946

(Fireworks Galaxy, Caldwell 12)
(face-on spiral galaxy)

NGC 6946 is a spiral galaxy about 25 million light years' distant. It has the nickname Fireworks Galaxy because of the number of supernovae observed. It is an intermediate spiral galaxy (galaxy classification SAB), indicating it has a bar-like structure but not sufficiently defined to term the galaxy barred. It is oriented so that the disk and spiral are observable.
