OSIRIS-REx

(New Frontiers 3, NF3)
(space mission aiming to return a sample of an asteroid)

OSIRIS-REx (Origins-spectral Interpretation-resource Identification-security-regolith Explorer, New Frontiers 3 or NF3) is a mission to carry samples of an asteroid back to Earth. The asteroid is 1999 RQ36, now known as 101955 Bennu.

The project was chosen as the third NASA' New Frontiers mission and was launched in September 2016 and entered orbit around the asteroid in December 2018, subsequently observing from orbit. The observations have their own value and will also assist in planning the attempt to acquire a sample. The mission aims to collect the sample in 2020 and bring it to Earth in 2023.
