pulsating star

(variable star that varies through energy pulses)

A pulsating star is a variable star that varies because of pulses in energy release, i.e., stellar pulsation. Layers of such a star expand and contract in an oscillation rather than settle into hydrostatic equilibrium. Within this class are Cepheid variables, RR Lyrae variables and Delta Scuti variables.
