Shane Telescope
(C. Donald Shane Telescope)
(3.05 m reflector telescope at Lick Observatory)
The Shane Telescope is a 3.05 m (120 inch)
reflector telescope at Lick Observatory.
It began operation in 1959 and was the second largest reflecting
telescope in the world until the 1970s.
The telescope has an equatorial mount.
Depending upon the particular instrument's mounting, the
telescope functions as a
Cassegrain reflector, a prime focus reflector, or a coudé focus telescope
reflector.
Among its current instruments:
- PFCam "Prime Focus Camera".
- Kast Spectrograph ("Kast Double-Beam Spectrograph").
- Gemini Infrared Imaging Camera.
- Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph.
Past instruments:
- Cassegrain spectrograph (predecessor to Kast Spectrograph) with IDS (Image-dissector Scanner, which carried out the function of a CCD).
