solar nebula

(cloud of gas and dust that formed the solar system)

The solar nebula is a term for the cloud of gas and dust from which the solar system was formed, and after the Sun emerged, the protoplanetary disk that surrounded it. The term minimum mass solar nebula (MMSN) refers to a model protoplanetary disk with the minimal amount of mass to produce the Sun's currently-understood planetary system.
