The phrase surface reaction is used for reactions between two chemicals that are adjacent rather than mixed, a term that can be applied to reactions between a planet's atmosphere and standing liquid (lake or ocean), and also applies to such reactions between an atmosphere or liquid with a solid surface. Those between gas and liquid, be it water or hydrocarbons or molten rock, can be a significant factor in the evolution and makeup of the atmosphere.
