The term symbiotic binary (or just symbiotic star, SS) is used for a binary star that is not in contact, i.e., has an orbital period up to a year or more, but shows signs of mass transfer. According to descriptions I find, at least some are spectrum binaries. The accepted model is accretion by a white dwarf of stellar wind material from a companion giant star, e.g., red giant. (Note that a year-long orbit around a greater-than solar mass giant could easily be close enough for interaction.) Some alternate between an active phase (i.e., when the transfer is occurring) and a quiescent phase. Some have jets.
