templates

(mechanism to help classify many survey objects or events)

Templates are used in the automated classification of observation data, including photometry or spectral energy distribution of objects, e.g., to determine redshift or to otherwise type the object, or to similarly analyze light curve of events such as supernovae. Matching may be done by statistical means, such as Bayesian statistics. The large amount of data collected by automated and/or large surveys motivates this: too many objects to classify without automation, which can incorporate templates.
