UTMOST

(telescope aiming to detect radio transients)

UTMOST is the results of a substantial 2017 upgrade to MOST, the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope, a radio telescope located in Hoskinstown, Australia. The upgraded telescope's target is radio transients including pulsar observations and fast radio bursts (FRBs).

MOST was a c1980 rebuilding of the 1960s Molonglo Cross Telescope. The Molonglo Cross was cross-shaped (with north-south and east-west arms), and MOST reconfigured that into twin 778 m east-west cylindrical telescopes, 15 m separated. The UTMOST upgrade gave it a modern back end. A further upgrade carried out in 2020-2021 is termed UTMOST-2D, which restores its north-south arms, i.e., restores its cross shape.
