Full Listing of Books on Autism
All the books on one page, in sections.
Sections:
These entries are from e-mail, online book lists, and the
bibliographies included in books and papers.
This will always be a work in progress in that I am
constantly adding to it and correcting it.
I welcome any additions or corrections you can contribute
and thank everyone who has already sent me contributions, in particular
one correspondent who has made numerous contributions but
wishes to remain anonymous.
I'm trying to include every book title I can lay my hands on.
At the time I'm writing this (2/00), I have titles for between
600 and 700 books specifically dedicated to Autism
and I seldom add a book to the list because the vast majority of
times that I see a reference or citation to a book,
it is already in the list.
I now estimate that there are no more than 1000 such books in all,
which is why I can tackle the creation,
correction and maintenance of this list in my spare time.
While this list includes books in languages other than English, it does
not include many because I do not run into references to them nearly so
often as the ones in English, and when I see a title, I cannot
aways tell if it is really about autism.
Also included in this bibliography are a few books not specifically
dedicated to autism, but said to be valuable to parents of autistics.
Each entry has
key words which indicate whether the book is specifically about autism.
If you read this online, the ISBN numbers are links to
Amazon.com
which might offer the book for sale.
A bibliography of journal articles on autism would be valuable but
would be much longer: it would not surprise me if there are 10,000
such articles. I will leave it to others to tackle such a list
(I believe
The Indiana Resource Center for Autism
maintains such a list as does the
Autism Research Unit
of the
University of Sunderland, England).
I would not mind assembling a list of the 20 or 50 most valuable
articles if I knew how to choose them.
I welcome short descriptions of and opinions on the books.
Opinions are generally included like this: "Reader: great book on
educational issues."
I maintain this list in Unix bib format,
then convert it to HTML and
the format used in the
AUTISM FAQ Memo.
I am updating the list constantly, so changes have been made to it
since the writing of this introduction.

Key to labels
To assist you in finding a book on a particular subject,
each entry has a label with one or more keywords listed as:
[keyword,keyword,...].
Note that the labeling is in no sense complete, e.g.
not every book about psychoanalysis is yet labelled
[autism, psychoanalysis], and in particular, a book labelled
simply [autism] is not to be assumed to be a general book
on autism.

- [autism]
- book for which autism is the primary subject or one of
the primary subjects or a book that is included in this list
specifically because of its material on autism.
Note that there are some books which I thought might be about
autism but was not certain: they do carry this label, but have a comment
to the effect that I'm not sure.
Also: the fiction books listed because they have an autistic or
autistic-like character are also labelled autism.
- [behavioral]
- about behavioral methods, e.g. applied behavioral analysis, discrete
trial training, etc.
- [bibliography]
- book-length bibliography.

- Mindblindness: An Essay on Autism and Theory of Mind
(Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT Press, 1995).
Part of the series Learning, Development, and Conceptual Change.
In Mindblindness, Simon Baron-Cohen presents a
model of the evolution and development of "mindreading." [As far as I
can tell from reviews, he is not referring to extra-sensory powers,
but uses the term "mindreading" to mean the unconscious deductions &
educated guesses we make about other peoples' minds -ed] He argues
that we mindread all the time, effortlessly, automatically, and mostly
unconsciously. It is the natural way in which we interpret, predict,
and participate in social behavior and communication. We ascribe
mental states to people: states such as thoughts, desires, knowledge,
and intentions. Building on many years of research, Baron-Cohen
concludes that children with autism, suffer from "mindblindness" as a
result of a selective impairment in mindreading. For these children,
the world is essentially devoid of mental things. Note: Newsweek
1995/8/14 has an article featuring this book.

(McGraw-Hill, 1978).
Republished 1991.
Presents a case history of a child who is variously described as
autistic, schizophrenic, and retarded, who is rescued by the therapist
author from his over-protective mother. It's unclear whether she
believes that his mother caused all his problems or was merely
exacerbating them. The book only reveals in very very small print that
it's "a composite of a number of cases of the problems faced by the
social service and medical profession in the diagnosis, treatment, and
development of capabilities of such children" (i.e. this didn't
actually take place).
