BASS (for BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey) is an observing program of over 1000 active galactic nuclei that were identified in Swift BAT X-ray observation data. BAT, which is Swift's Burst Alert Telescope, watches for gamma-ray bursts as it simultaneously surveys the sky, offering a means of discovering X-ray sources of interest. Its bandwidth covers X-rays and soft gamma rays, and has an extremely large field of view (thousands of square degrees) as well as good sensitivity and localization. BASS is a follow-up program using numerous optical-near infrared spectrographs.
