EROS
(Expérience pour la Recherche d'Objets Sombres)
(search for MACHOs)
EROS (for
Expérience pour la Recherche d'Objets Sombres, i.e.,
Experience in Searching for Dark Objects)
was a survey
to identify MACHOs, i.e., dark matter in the form of
brown dwarfs or field planets,
by searching for gravitational microlensing events
while watching stars in the Magellanic Clouds.
EROS-1 observations were carried out in 1990-1995
and EROS-2 in 1996-2003, by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at the La Silla Observatory (LSO)
site.
Some variable stars and supernovae were observed.
Similar projects have been the MACHO Project and OGLE.
