FAST

(Five Hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope)
(Arecibo-like 500 m telescope in deployment in China)

FAST (Five Hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Telescope) is a radio telescope under construction in China. It was begun in 2011 and has been in testing since 2016. It is similar to Arecibo Observatory but is 500 m across to Arecibo's 305 m. Its effective aperture is 300 m, the additional size being used to increase its ability to point, to 40° from zenith compared to Arecibo's 20°. Though it has spherical in the name, it actually includes the capability of deforming the reflector into a parabolic shape directed at its target. Current efforts are to provide nine feeds spanning 70 MHz to 3 GHz.
