FITS (for Flexible Image Transport System) is a digital data format for storing, transporting, and importing/exporting multi-dimensional tables, which, for example, can store spectral energy distributions, (2D) images, or data cubes, etc. Libraries to read and write files in FITS format have been developed for astronomy's commonly-used programming languages. FITS was developed by the IAU in 1981 for use in astronomy, and has since been enhanced.
