(infrared instrument designed to image exoplanets)
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is near-infrared imager
installed in Gemini South (Gemini Observatory)
aimed at detecting the infrared light from
young gas giantextra-solar planets.
It includes adaptive optics and a coronagraph along with a camera.
It saw first light in 2013 and began regular operation in 2014.
GPI has been down since 2020 for the deployment of an upgrade
termed GPI 2.0.
Current (June 2026) expectations are first light in 2027 and regular
use in 2028.
