Markarian galaxy

(Mkn)
(list of galaxies with excess ultraviolet light)

Markarian galaxies have an excess of ultraviolet light from the galaxy's nucleus, indicating more than the usual percentage of A-type through O-type stars. Benjamin Markarian searched out and assembled a list of them during a period from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.

Note that Benjamin Markarian also produced a list of open cluster discoveries, which are often designated using the same prefixes, such as "Mrk 38", which is used to designate a particular Markarian galaxy and also used for a particular open cluster. Using the general "Cl" (for "cluster") prefix, e.g., "Cl Mrk 38", is one way to avoid the ambiguity.
