Parkes Observatory
(Parkes 64m Telescope, Parkes 210ft Telescope, Murriyang, Parkes Telescope)
(Australian observatory with large single-dish radio telescope)
Parkes Observatory, in Australia, is primarily the home of
one radio telescope, the Parkes 64m Telescope,
which began operation in 1963.
The telescope was given the official name Murriyang in 2020,
and through its life, it has also been known as the Parkes 210ft Telescope,
and just the Parkes Telescope.
References to Parkes Observatory also often mean the telescope.
Current instruments (receivers):
- UWL - Ultra Wideband Low receiver (704-4032 MHz)
- METH6 (about 4.7 cm)
- MARS (3 cm)
- 13MM (1.3 cm)
Some former:
The telescope has also been used for communication with spacecraft.
The observatory site does also have a
smaller (18-meter) movable dish to perform interferometry
in conjunction with the 64 meter dish, but it is no longer in use.
The site has also hosted a 12-meter ASKAP prototype dish.
