3C 279
(striking variable quasar)
3C 279 is a quasar, identified as such in the 1960s,
and is an optically violent variable quasar (OVV)
and is often termed a blazar.
It has shown substantial activity
in visible light, ultraviolet, and X-rays,
is a bright gamma-ray source and
its jet shows (apparent) superluminal motion.
It has been observed by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), both for calibration
of EHT M87 observations and for its own interest.
