galactic worm

(GW, HI worm)
(high density streak of HI perpendicular to galactic plane)

The terms galactic worm (GW) and HI worm have been used for apparent streaks of HI (e.g., detected through 21-cm line surveys) perpendicular to the galactic plane that have been interpreted as candidates for the intersection of HI supershells with the gas of the Milky Way galactic disk. They constitute a sign of the presence of the supershell.
