Local Sheet

(flat grouping of galaxies around the Local Group)

The Local Sheet is a flat grouping of galaxies including the Local Group. It is about 7 Mpc across and 0.5 Mpc thick and is within the Local Volume (a name for all space within 10 Mpc of us), in turn, a portion of the Virgo Supercluster. The galaxies in the Local Sheet are relatively consistent regarding peculiar velocity. It includes 14 more large galaxies beyond the Local Group, similar to the Milky Way or larger.
