Local Volume
(LV)
(region around the Local Group)
The term Local Volume (LV), occasionally used in descriptions
of surveys, indicates the region of space around
the Local Group. Criteria varies but typically a distance from
us is used, i.e., a sphere centered on the Milky Way.
Distances in the range of 10 to 20 Mpc have been used. It is
invariably within the Virgo Supercluster and includes many more
galaxies than the Local Group.
