A solar telescope is a telescope designed for observation of the Sun. Light collection is often not a problem so angular resolution may be the motivation for any more than a small aperture. The coronagraph was developed for solar observation as a means to view the Sun's corona. A number of solar telescopes have been space-based:
Some ground-based:
The National Solar Observatory (NSO) and the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) operate ground solar telescopes.
Space-based solar telescopes are often placed at Lagrangian point L1. Ground-based solar telescopes generally are of two types: a tower telescope has an aimable mirror that reflects sunlight down a fixed path (typically vertical), a means of accommodating a long focal length; or alternately, a spar telescope, mounted much like other research telescopes, such that the whole telescope can be repositioned, e.g., with an equatorial mount.
